Heart Shaped Chocolate Chip Scones
What to make for a romantic breakfast on Valentine's Day? Brian's not a big breakfast eater so he's not interested in the full breakfast-in-bed tray of morning fare. But he does love my scones with a big pot of morning coffee.
I would normally think of blueberry or cranberry flavors for breakfast but, it is Valentine's Day after all. And, since I have these adorable cutters, heart shaped chocolate chip scones coming up!
Don't have a sweetie to make these for? Make 'em for yourself! And since they smell amazing, maybe put a plate by the window and see if anyone good shows up :) Enjoy!
Ingredients
2 Cups all purpose flour
1/2 Cup sugar plus 1 tablespoon
1 Stick unsalted butter
1/2 Cup buttermilk (I used low fat)
1/4 Cup half and half (I used fat free)
1 Egg
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1 Teaspoon vanilla
1 Cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
In a large bowl, combine the flour, half cup of sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles course crumbs. In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, vanilla, egg and half and half. Add the wet ingredients into the butter/flour mixture and mix until incorporated. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Spoon free-form scones onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, sprinkle on the remaining tablespoon of sugar and bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 45 minutes or until lightly golden brown. The dough will be soft and spread on the baking sheet. When done, remove from the oven and cut out heart shapes with a cutter while the scones are still warm. Makes approximately a dozen scones.
These looks fabulous! Perfect with a morning coffee :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Deletewell prepared & mouthwatering..;)
ReplyDeleteTasty Appetite
Thanks!
DeleteGlad to see something on the lighter side for Valentine! This does have chocolate but it is not over indulgent. Nice way to start off breakfast, Valentine's day or not. Delicious post!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tina. You're right, they are lighter than the other posts I'm seeing and that's the way I like to cook. But since it's Valentine's Day, I've got a gooey chocolaty dessert coming up soon :)
DeleteI second what Tina said. They do look delicious, though :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteHow adorable are these!! Perfect for a breakfast in bed celebration!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Steph! Enjoy your own celebration :)

DeleteEverything is so much tastier when its a heart shape. Too cute!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! Thanks :)
DeleteMmmm, these look yummy. I think scones are one of my favorite things to make. I think it's the instant gratification you get from a scone. Love it. Nice website.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I agree, I love scones because they are so easy to make and I can whip them up fast.
DeletePutting on my list for Valentine's Day now! They look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Hope you two enjoy them.
DeleteThese are super cute! Great post :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Liam! They're a bit on the healthy side compared to your posts, though :)

ReplyDeleteThanks! Happy Valentine's Day!
DeleteThese are so cute and they look delicious!
ReplyDeleteThanks!

ReplyDeleteWow...it's what's for breakfast this weekend!..I'm going to use white chocolate and perhaps a few dried strawberry or cranberry bits....Excellent recipe and idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Donna! Either of those would be great and I love white chocolate, too.
DeleteAww, what a cute idea! Chocolate chip is my favorite :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! What could be bad about chocolate? :)
DeleteYour chocolate chip scones look delicious. Just in time for Valentine's Day:)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Happy Valentine's Day!
DeleteThese are SOOOO CUTE!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Claire! Happy Valentine's Day to you your hubby!
DeleteCongrats for being top 9 :) Perfect recipe for Valentine's day! I'm not sure why I've never thought of putting chocolate chips into scones YUM~
ReplyDeleteThanks! What could be bad about chocolate chips, right? Happy Valentine's Day!
DeleteHow perfect for Valentine's Day! I'm not crazy about scones, but when stuffed with chocolate chips and shaped like hearts, they seem much more enticing!
ReplyDeleteThanks. If the reason you're not crazy about scones is because they tend to be dry then you might like these. This batter is more moist and cake-like which is why it spreads in the oven.
DeleteWhat do you do with the left over parts after you cut out the heart shape? I'm thinking freeze leftover crumbs in ziploc bags and use for cup cake crumb topping on top of iceing? The scottish side of me says, waste not, want not.....especially in today's economy.
ReplyDeleteOh, no worries, nothing is wasted. I'm not sure that this dough will make a good crumb topping but the scraps taste as delicious as the heart shapes. Normally they should be the cook's treat but Mr. Hungry Couple believes firmly in tasting all my food before it ever makes it onto a plate or basket :) So this recipe is great because he is happily munching away on the scraps while I take pictures :)
DeleteChocolate chip is my favorite! I look forward to try this recipe
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lisa. I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteScones are something that I have yet to tackle, but you're right, they would be perfect for Valentine's Day. I'm sure that the chocolate chips wouldn't hurt either ;)
ReplyDeleteScones look lovely and very very cute - just perfect for V Day!!Congrats on the Top 9 and following you happily:)

Choc Chip Uru
Perfect for V-day! Love the hearts (and the chocolate chips!)
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a breakfast eater either, but I'll take a good scone any day!!
ReplyDeleteI made these last night to pack in my honey's lunch today and by this morning there were only 2 left! Mind you there are only three of us! I was only able to make one in the shape of a heart. I guess I need a smaller heart shaped cookie cutter ;) But they were delicious so no matter they weren't heart shapped!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you liked them, Jan. I used my medium heart cutter which is about 3" or so. I can relate to your story - I barely got to taste them and there are only two of us! :)
DeleteThese look really amazing!! I love scones, and chocoalte chips so looks like the perfect combination to me!
ReplyDeleteNeed to try these beauties!
ReplyDeleteI love that you cut these out! I made scones the other day actually but only had boring round ones. And I love chocolate chip anything, which is definitely more fun than the dried cherries I used haha
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me want half and half is .I live in australia and I dont seem to be able to buy it thanks dot.
ReplyDeleteHalf & half is half milk and half pouring cream. It's sold that way in the U.S. but you can certainly make your own. You can also use straight cream. I used the mix to lower the calorie content. I hope that helps.
