The chances of my getting through the holiday season without buying at least one container of egg nog are basically zero. It's such a creamy, indulgent treat and I've loved it since I was a kid. But, as an adult, I find I need to cut the sweetness a bit. Fortunately, adulthood comes with the ability to pour bourbon into it.
My go-to for many years was Scotch whiskey and eggnog but this year I tried balancing the flavors a bit more. The strong hit of whiskey and the super sweet nog needed something more in order to work together. A touch of strong almond liqueur, like Amaretto, provides the balance and the almond flavor works beautifully with the eggnog. I also gave it some spice with ground cinnamon and ginger for a holiday flavor.
This drink only uses a couple of ounces of nog so it's bourbon forward which leaves room for a hit of extra sweetness from a sugared rim. Dell Cove Spices makes a Christmas blend rim sugar that adds a festive red and green holiday touch to this white cocktail. If I'm expecting company, I rim a few glasses ahead of time and keep them in the freezer. Guests always love the way this looks...and, of course, the way it tastes. Cheers!
